The College of Medicine
The College of Medicine, Taibah University was established in 1420-1421 H., (2000-2001 G.) as a branch of King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah
which follow the curricular plan of the annual system.
The Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, King Abdul-Aziz
University-Madinah branch was established upon recommendation No. 1419-11-2 of the Higher Education Council on 13-2-1419 approved
by the Royal Decree No. 8/167 on 1419-3-29 of his Majesty King Fahed Ben Abdul-Aziz, “The Custodian of the Two Holly
Mosques”.
The first batch of medical
students for the 1st year male and female sections were enrolled in the academic year 1420/1421 H., (2000 G.) and will
be graduated at the end of this academic year 1426-1427 H (2005-2006 G).
At the beginning the college followed the curricular plan of the annual system.
In 1426-1427 H (2005-2006G) the College Board approved the semester system as a curricular plan of the College to be
implemented for the first year students of the academic year 1426-1427 H (2005-2006 G). Educational programs currently
face a multitude of challenges that issued from scientific advances and social developments at both the national and international
levels.
The vast progress of the health services in the Kingdom,
places a considerable burden on Colleges of Medicine to meet the substantial requirements of qualified manpower for both the
therapeutic and preventative aspects of health care. The increased demand by the public for better health services and medical
discoveries which have practical implications on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, make continuous updating of the teaching
and training programs in medicine an absolute necessity.
This is what we have
tried to accomplish, when we set out to revise our curriculum. The move to the new facilities provided us with a better opportunity
to implement developments in the teaching programs, to initiate new programs in the medical sciences. Professionalism, Nutrition,
Communication skills, Applied Anatomy, Genetics, Immunology, Alternative Medicine and Skill lab are new programs in the current
curriculum plan. As the teaching language is English there is a special emphasis on English language in the first year (intensive
program 20 contact hours/ week). The change in the current plan was made according to studies done to elucidate the points
of strength, weakness and the opportunities for improvement.
The new plan included also updating
the methods of instruction and increasing the self learning part gradually. The educational programs of the College of Medicine
aim at producing generations of highly qualified nationals in the field of medicine, who are capable of offering competent
and professional health services to the public. These programs have also been designed to prepare students for post-graduate
studies nationally and internationally. Furthermore, the College actively encourages and aims at providing a suitable scientific
atmosphere to enable staff members to carry out their research interests in both basic and clinical sciences.
The department of Medical Education,
the Curriculum Committee and the Library Committee of the College were assigned to carry out these targets for implementation.
One of these important targets of the department is Staff and Exam development by updating teaching and exam methodology according
to the international systems (including the Electronic Learning System).
